5 Ways to Take Care of Your New Roof
After the excitement of having a new roof installed, all that’s left to do is sit outside in a lawn chair and accept glowing compliments from your neighbor’s on how sharp it looks…right? But after the initial excitement wears off, it’s easy to forget about your roof. After all, if you’re not thinking about your roof it probably means it’s performing as it should, without any leaks or missing shingles.
Just like your car needs oil changes and yearly maintenance, your roof needs periodic maintenance attention too. Here are a few things you can do to help extend the life of your new roof:
- Control Roof Debris
Keep an eye out for tree limbs that are rubbing against the roof and pine needles or leaf matter build up. Call an arborist to trim back any limbs or remove large trees near the perimeter of the home.
- Keep Critters at Bay
Trees act as a “critter highway” to your beautiful new roof. Roaming critters such as squirrels and raccoons love to chew on shingles, eventually causing leaks. Keeping limbs trimmed back from the roof line will help deter unwelcome traffic on your roof.
- Maintain a Watchful Eye
From the ground, do a quick walk around to see if anything looks out of place on the roof and handle repairs promptly. Look for missing shingles, tree damage, debris build up, dark spots, etc.
- Clean your Gutters
Debris can build up in your gutter channels which can cause water to jump into your siding/drywall. This is a far too common issue. Keep your gutters clean, and your house dry.
- Know When to Ask for Help
When you do find an issue with your roof, don’t get in over your head. It can be tempting to save a few dollars by taking the DIY route, but repairs done improperly can lead to serious damage that will end up costing a lot more than simply hiring a professional upfront. Know your limits and make sure repairs get done right.
