Getting your roof repaired or replaced is a big task. It’s not something you want to approach lightly, because the finished product needs to last you for years to come. You want to find a good price, of course, but it’s even more important to find the company that will do the job well.
Choosing your roofer doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Here’s how to do it:
Talk to Your Friends
You want to get a list of three or four local roofers. Ask your friends and neighbors. Go online to find the major roofers in your area and choose ones that are well-established and have good online reviews. Narrow your search and compare your top handful of companies.
Out-of-town roofers are often scammers. By choosing a local company, you can review their history and commitment to the community and take a look at the work they’ve done.
Check Up on the Company
This means verifying the company’s address, license, and insurance. This article on Angie’s List even recommends calling the insurance company to make sure the roofers have the policies they claim to have.
Review the Quote and Contract Carefully
Make sure your quote explains exactly what is going to be done and what it will cost. The cheapest option isn’t always the best. If all three or four of your selected companies have the same qualifications, positive reviews, and years of experience, the quotes could be very similar. If one is way below the others, you might want to discard it. Also consider the warranty the company offers. For how long are they willing to stand behind the work they do?
Remember: no honest roofing company will ask for the total payment up front. Home Advisor goes on to advise that although a deposit is a standard practice, you shouldn’t pay it in cash. By paying with a credit card, you have a better chance of getting your money back if you do happen to choose the wrong company. (But don’t worry…when you follow these guidelines, you should do just fine!)
How Do You Feel About the Company?
Don’t disregard the experience you’ve had with the company prior to signing a contract. Were your questions answered promptly and completely? Was the person on the other end of the phone friendly and knowledgeable? A good roofing company has good customer service that extends from that first contact all the way through the completed roof.
